Is Disney Building a Guardians of the Galaxy Ride?
The latest rumor is that Disney will be replacing the Universe of Energy with Ellen Degeneres. Epcot’s Universe of Energy has been around for quite some time and in the early days it was a state of the art attraction that met the main criteria of Epcot….entertaining and educational.
However, competition (See Universal Studios Florida) is the name of the game and riding the coattails of a successful movie is a smart move by Disney if in fact they make this a reality.
Vekoma has long been a successful partner with Disney, creating notable attractions such as Goofy’s Barnstormer, Expedition Everest and Snow Whites Mine Train to name a few. While this rumor is no-where near far fetched without identifying circumstances, there are some things that lend additional credibility.
A fan and admirer of Vekoma posted some thought provoking images he took at the Vekoma test site. It’s an obvious work in progress – sandbox style – of a roller coaster. So certainly this is hypothetical speculation, but it does has some validity especially if you consider a patent filled by Disney in 2012.
The patent describes a simulated “Flying Roller Coaster” experience where the ride participants are laying in a prone position leaning forward for much of the ride. This would be the first thrill ride of this nature at Disney World.
Not a slam dunk for sure but our hunches say that this is where Disney is headed with this. It may take on several phases of evolution before (and if) it reaches any type of announcement. Until then, this give Disney-philes plenty to ponder and dream about!
